Why Do I React That Way? Understanding the Ego States Within Us

Have you ever reacted to a situation perhaps with sudden irritation defensiveness or a wave of overwhelming self doubt and wondered afterward why on earth did I do that?

If so you are entirely human.

Most of us move through life feeling like a single unified self. But if you look a little closer you will notice you actually have many different internal parts. One minute you might be operating from a place of strict logic the next you feel crushed by an inner critic and moments later you are laughing with the carefree spontaneity of a child.

In Transactional Analysis (TA) these shifting internal gears are called Ego States commonly broken down into;

  • Parent

  • Adult

  • Child

A House With Three Rooms

Think of your inner world like a house with three rooms.

“You don't live in just one room; you move between them constantly often without even noticing”.

  • The Parent: The internalised echoes of rules care guidance and expectations we picked up early in life. It can show up as a harsh inner critic or a deeply nurturing caretaker.

  • The Adult: Our grounded present moment self. It looks at current facts with curiosity stays calm and makes intentional choices.

  • The Child: The seat of our emotions creativity intuition and playfulness as well as the old survival habits we developed when we felt small or unprotected.

Moving From Judgment to Curiosity

The goal of exploring your ego states is not to judge yourself fix yourself or silence parts of who you are. This work is simply about bringing a quiet awareness to your patterns so you can meet yourself and others with deeper kindness.

When you can look at your reactions and say;

“Ah that's just my protective Child part taking over”

“My Critical Parent is driving right now”

Something incredible happens:

  1. You regain choice

  2. You stop being on autopilot

  3. You start responding to life with greater steadiness.
